Lead Controls Engineer
Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced and innovative Lead Automation Engineer to take charge of designing, developing, and deploying sophisticated control systems across our chemical processing and testing operations. This leadership role involves setting technical direction, defining system specifications, and managing both internal engineering teams and external collaborators. The successful candidate will bring deep knowledge of automation architecture, PLC/HMI/SCADA integration, and a proven ability to deliver complex engineering solutions from initial concept through to final commissioning.
Primary Duties
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and maintain the overarching automation strategy and system architecture for multiple operational sites and product lines.
- Prioritize tasks, assign responsibilities, and ensure timely delivery of project milestones.
- Mentor and support engineering staff through technical reviews, guidance, and quality assurance.
- Coordinate efforts with contractors, suppliers, and external engineering partners to ensure alignment and execution.
System Design & Specification
- Lead the creation of comprehensive control system specifications, covering PLC, HMI, and SCADA components.
- Define and uphold standards for instrumentation and control documentation, including I/O schedules, PLC mappings, and integration with process diagrams.
- Oversee the design and implementation of Siemens-based PLC systems to meet performance and operational goals.
- Administer SCADA infrastructure including hardware, software, operator interfaces, version control, and network components such as firewalls and switches.
- Supervise simulation, testing, and validation activities to ensure systems meet technical, regulatory, and safety standards.
Technical Execution
- Actively contribute to the design, programming, and testing of control systems for high-priority or technically demanding projects.
- Perform hands-on integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting to resolve complex issues.
- Champion best practices in automation software development, simulation, and verification.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years' experience in automation system design, implementation, and project management.
- Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale automation initiatives from requirements gathering through execution.
- Expertise with Siemens S7-1500 PLCs and associated tools including STEP 7 Professional, STEP 7 Safety Advanced, PLCSim Advanced, and WinCC OA.
- Strong background in SCADA systems, industrial networking, data historians, and control documentation.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, with a track record of mentoring engineers and managing external stakeholders.
- Comfortable working in dynamic environments that require both strategic oversight and hands-on technical involvement.
- Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to make independent technical decisions.
