Lead Substation Engineer

Overview
An established engineering consulting organization supporting electric utilities is seeking an experienced Lead Substation Engineer to join its high-voltage engineering team. This position plays a key role in delivering complex substation projects while providing technical leadership and direct client engagement.

The successful candidate will lead multi-discipline project teams on utility-scale substation projects spanning distribution through extra-high voltage systems. This role requires strong technical depth, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to build trust with clients through clear communication and consistent execution.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design

  • Develop substation physical and electrical designs, including general arrangements, layouts, and sectional drawings
  • Design grounding systems, lightning protection, and cable/conduit infrastructure
  • Prepare equipment layouts, material takeoffs, and construction specifications
  • Perform and review engineering calculations and studies, including grounding, voltage drop, AC/DC load analyses, and lightning evaluations
  • Coordinate design interfaces with Civil, Structural, and Protection & Control engineering teams

Project & Team Leadership

  • Act as the engineering lead for assigned substation projects from concept through construction
  • Provide day-to-day technical oversight, mentorship, and direction to engineers and designers
  • Conduct design reviews and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements
  • Support project execution during construction, including responding to RFIs and field conditions
  • Maintain responsibility for schedule adherence, quality, and client satisfaction

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred; FE with progression toward licensure considered
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience supporting electric utility or utility-scale substation projects
  • Proven expertise in substation engineering, with emphasis on physical or electrical design
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interface confidently with clients and project stakeholders
