Quality Engineer/Quality Staff (Tunneling)

Our client is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Tunneling Quality Engineer / Quality Control Staff to support underground construction projects in the San Jose area. This role is responsible for ensuring that all tunneling and related construction activities meet project specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in heavy civil or underground construction and a strong understanding of QA/QC processes within tunneling environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain the project-specific Quality Management Plan (QMP) for tunneling operations
  • Perform daily inspections and quality control checks for tunneling activities (e.g., TBM operations, microtunneling, shaft construction, ground support systems)
  • Ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable codes and standards
  • Review and track submittals, RFIs, inspection requests, and material certifications
  • Coordinate with field teams, subcontractors, and project engineers to address and resolve quality issues
  • Document and track non-conformance reports (NCRs) and corrective actions
  • Monitor installation of critical components such as liners, segments, pipe, grouting, and waterproofing systems
  • Maintain accurate and organized quality records, inspection logs, and reporting documentation
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings, quality audits, and owner/third-party inspections
  • Support testing and verification processes, including concrete, soils, and material testing
  • Collaborate with project management and field supervision to ensure continuous quality improvement

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience)
  • Experience working on heavy civil or underground construction projects (tunneling experience strongly preferred)
  • Strong understanding of QA/QC processes, procedures, and documentation in construction
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with field and office teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience on tunneling projects (TBM, NATM, or microtunneling)
  • Familiarity with applicable standards (ASTM, ACI, Caltrans, or project-specific specifications)
  • Experience with quality management systems and digital reporting tools
  • Certifications such as ACI, NICET, or related quality/inspection credentials
