Remote Building Automation Engineer (Design)
The Design Engineer is responsible for engineering complete building automation and HVAC control systems from bid award through construction turnover. You'll translate mechanical drawings, specifications and sequences of operation into buildable control system designs - panel layouts, wiring diagrams, points lists and submittals - across commercial, healthcare, data centre, education and institutional projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Review mechanical plans, specifications and sequences of operation to develop system architecture and equipment selections.
- Produce submittal packages: control drawings, riser diagrams, panel layouts, wiring schematics, valve/damper schedules and bills of material.
- Size and select field devices - control valves, dampers, actuators, sensors, VFDs and controllers.
- Write and validate sequences of operation, and develop points lists and I/O schedules.
- Support project managers with estimating, change orders, RFIs and value engineering.
- Coordinate with field technicians and programmers through installation, commissioning and closeout; resolve design issues on site.
- Ensure designs comply with ASHRAE standards, local mechanical/electrical codes, energy codes and project specifications.
- Produce as-built documentation and O&M manuals at project completion.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience in building automation/HVAC controls.
- 3+ years designing BAS/HVAC control systems for commercial or institutional facilities.
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems: AHUs, VAV, chilled water and hot water plants, boilers, RTUs, heat pumps.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or Revit; familiarity with BIM coordination workflows.
- Understanding of open protocols - BACnet MS/TP and BACnet/IP, Modbus, LonWorks.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical and architectural construction documents.
