Overview
A well-established and growing engineering consultancy is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer I to join its Chicago-based team. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer looking to gain hands-on project exposure, develop technical expertise, and take ownership of work across a wide variety of geotechnical projects.
You will play a key role in delivering high-quality geotechnical analysis and reporting, working alongside experienced engineers on both field and design work. This position offers strong mentorship, clear progression, and exposure to complex and challenging projects across the region.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare geotechnical reports including analysis, interpretations, and practical design recommendations
- Perform engineering calculations related to foundations, earthworks, and subsurface conditions
- Support the management of geotechnical projects from initial investigation through to delivery
- Review field data, boring logs, and laboratory results to inform design decisions
- Assist with proposal preparation, scope definition, and budget tracking
- Participate in client meetings and communicate technical findings clearly
- Support and occasionally oversee field investigations, including drilling and sampling operations
- Classify soils and interpret subsurface conditions
- Help mentor junior staff and contribute to team development
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering (or related discipline)
- 0-3 years of relevant geotechnical or civil engineering experience
- EIT certification or on track to obtain
- Strong understanding of soil mechanics and geotechnical principles
- Experience with field investigations and report writing is advantageous
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
