Sr. Protection & Control Electrical Engineer (Power Systems)

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Protection & Control Substation Engineer to join our Power Systems team. This role focuses on the design, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems for high-voltage substations. The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise in power system protection, relay coordination, and substation automation, along with strong leadership and project management skills.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Engineering:

    • Develop protection and control schemes for transmission and distribution substations (typically 69kV-500kV).
    • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and relay settings.
    • Ensure compliance with IEEE, NERC, and utility standards.
  • System Analysis:

    • Perform short-circuit, load flow, and relay coordination studies using tools such as ETAP, ASPEN, or similar.
    • Analyze fault scenarios and propose reliable protection strategies.
  • Project Leadership:

    • Lead multidisciplinary teams on substation projects from concept through commissioning.
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Testing & Commissioning:

    • Develop test plans and oversee relay testing, SCADA integration, and commissioning activities.
    • Troubleshoot protection system issues during energization and operation.
  • Documentation & Compliance:

    • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and bills of material.
    • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and cybersecurity standards for substation automation.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems focus preferred).
    • Master's degree or PE license is a plus.
  • Experience:

    • 8+ years of experience in protection and control engineering for substations.
    • Strong knowledge of protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.) and IEC 61850 protocols.
  • Skills:

    • Proficiency in power system analysis software (ETAP, ASPEN, PSSE).
    • Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus).
    • Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • NERC CIP compliance knowledge.
  • IEEE or IEC standards expertise.
