Transmission Planning Consultant

The position involves conducting advanced technical studies and providing strategic insights to support critical infrastructure decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct a variety of power system studies, including power flow, transient stability, short-circuit, voltage, harmonics, electromagnetic, reliability, and congestion analyses.
- Apply regulatory standards and assess risks using NERC, FERC, and regional guidelines, as well as production costing, risk assessment, and generator interconnection principles.
- Independently perform transmission planning studies using tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.
- Adapt standard engineering techniques to meet transmission planning criteria and procedures.
- Analyze technical, financial, and economic data to generate actionable insights.
- Develop assumptions for life-cycle cost analysis, including capital and O&M costs, performance metrics, and economic forecasts.
- Conduct regulatory and technical risk assessments.
- Perform detailed financial modeling using analytical software.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations.
- Support project management, proposal development, and client engagement efforts.
- Participate in client meetings, technical reviews, and strategic planning sessions.
- Ensure compliance with internal quality standards and policies.
- Perform additional duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program with 3+ years of relevant experience, or
- Master's degree in Engineering or Business with 2+ years of experience, or
- PhD in Engineering with at least 1 year of experience.
- Background in electric utility operations, planning, or consulting.
- Proficiency in power system planning and operations, including transient stability, short circuit, voltage analysis, and regulatory compliance.
- Familiarity with transmission systems and planning processes.
- Experience with industry-standard software tools for system analysis.
- Understanding of regional transmission organizations and power markets (e.g., PJM, MISO, NEISO, SPP, CAISO, WECC, ERCOT, NYISO).
- Strong knowledge of NERC and FERC standards.
- Ability to apply and adapt engineering techniques to complex planning challenges.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to evolving client needs and market trends.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
