Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Building Automation Project Manager to lead and deliver BAS/DDC projects throughout the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania market. This role is responsible for overseeing projects from turnover through execution, commissioning, and closeout, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in HVAC controls and building automation systems, along with the ability to coordinate effectively with engineering teams, field technicians, subcontractors, and end users. This role combines technical expertise with strong project leadership and customer management skills.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
- Manage BAS/DDC projects from kickoff through final completion
- Review project documentation, define scope, develop schedules, and allocate resources
- Coordinate with engineering, programming, installation, and commissioning teams to ensure successful execution
- Simultaneously manage multiple projects across new construction, retrofit, healthcare, higher education, commercial, and industrial facilities
- Monitor project progress and proactively address schedule, labor, or resource challenges
Subcontractor & Vendor Management
- Review subcontractor proposals and assist with vendor selection
- Prepare and manage subcontract agreements and associated documentation
- Communicate project scope, schedules, and expectations to subcontractors
- Ensure subcontractor performance aligns with project requirements, quality standards, and safety expectations
Procurement & Material Coordination
- Coordinate equipment and material procurement with suppliers and internal teams
- Track deliveries and align material availability with project schedules
- Work closely with customers, contractors, and field personnel regarding site logistics and material storage
- Support panel fabrication and equipment delivery schedules to avoid project delays
Project Financial Management
- Manage project budgets, forecasting, and cost control activities
- Monitor labor utilization and project profitability
- Support billing, invoicing, and financial reporting processes
- Identify, price, negotiate, and execute project change orders
- Review project financial performance and implement corrective actions where needed
Communication & Coordination
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, contractors, and internal stakeholders
- Maintain regular communication with engineering, programming, operations, and leadership teams
- Attend project meetings and conduct site visits throughout the Pittsburgh region
- Provide project status updates, risk assessments, and milestone reporting
Project Closeout
- Coordinate startup, commissioning, and system acceptance activities
- Ensure completion of project documentation, as-built drawings, and closeout packages
- Facilitate customer training and system turnover
- Support transition of completed projects to service and support teams
- Ensure customer satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle
Quality & Compliance Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety standards, codes, and industry best practices (NEC, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.)
- Verify installation, programming, and commissioning activities meet project specifications
- Maintain quality control throughout all project phases
- Identify and resolve project deficiencies in a timely manner
- Promote a strong safety culture across project teams and subcontractors
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of project management experience within Building Automation, BAS, DDC, or HVAC Controls
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems and building automation technologies
- Experience managing projects in commercial, institutional, healthcare, higher education, or industrial environments
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, control schematics, and sequences of operation
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project management software
- Ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred but not required)
- Hands-on experience with DDC installation, startup, or commissioning
- Experience with BACnet and other open-protocol BAS platforms
- Previous experience working for a controls contractor, systems integrator, or BAS manufacturer
- Familiarity with platforms such as Siemens, Tridium Niagara, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, or Automated Logic

- Strong project leadership and decision-making capabilities
- Excellent customer-facing communication skills
- Ability to manage project portfolios exceeding $800K in total value
- Strong attention to detail, documentation, and financial performance
- Effective collaboration with field teams, engineers, subcontractors, and customers
- Ability to travel throughout the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania region as required
