Design Engineer - Data Centers (Fully Remote, US‑Based)

Position Overview

The Design Engineer - Data Centers is responsible for engineering, designing, and coordinating technical solutions for mission‑critical data center projects across the United States. This fully remote role supports multidisciplinary engineering teams, owners, contractors, and commissioning agents to deliver high‑performance, scalable, and reliable data center infrastructure.

The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise in data center systems (mechanical, electrical, or controls), excellent problem‑solving skills, and experience supporting fast‑paced, large‑scale projects.


Work Arrangement

  • Fully remote role
  • Candidates must be based in the United States
  • Occasional travel (5-20%) may be required for site visits, coordination meetings, or commissioning support

Key Responsibilities

1. Engineering & Design

  • Develop detailed engineering designs for data center infrastructure systems (MEP or specialty discipline).
  • Prepare drawings, schematics, and specifications for construction.
  • Perform load calculations, equipment sizing, system modeling, and redundancy evaluations.
  • Support the development of scalable design standards for repeatable data center deployments.

2. Technical Documentation

  • Create technical submittals, design narratives, basis of design (BoD) documents, and equipment schedules.
  • Review vendor information and integrate into project documentation.
  • Ensure designs meet client requirements, industry codes, and mission‑critical standards.

3. Project Coordination

  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, commissioning agents, and cross‑discipline engineering teams.
  • Participate in virtual design meetings to review requirements, resolve issues, and refine solutions.
  • Coordinate with construction teams regarding RFIs, change orders, and design updates.

4. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Maintain design accuracy and ensure adherence to Tier standards (I-IV), redundancy strategies, and reliability criteria.
  • Conduct peer reviews and design checks to ensure high‑quality deliverables.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes (ASHRAE, NEC, NFPA, UPC, local jurisdictions).

5. Support During Construction & Commissioning

  • Provide remote engineering support during installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Troubleshoot system issues and propose corrective design modifications.
  • Review commissioning scripts, testing procedures, and performance data.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field.
  • Prior experience designing systems for data centers, mission‑critical facilities, or large‑scale industrial buildings.
  • Proficiency with engineering/design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, or discipline‑specific tools (e.g., SKM, Trace 700, PipeFlo).
  • Strong understanding of redundancy, reliability, and scalability requirements for data center systems.
  • Excellent communication skills suitable for remote teamwork.
  • Must reside in the US and be legally eligible to work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hyperscale or colocation data center projects (e.g., AWS, Meta, Microsoft, Google projects).
  • Familiarity with Uptime Institute Tier requirements and data center best practices.
  • Experience with BMS/EPMS design, controls sequences, or integration workflows.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is a plus.
  • Experience supporting site commissioning (Level 1-5 testing).
