Power Generation Project Engineer

About the Organization
This role sits within a highly established, privately held U.S. energy company involved in natural gas and power marketing, energy management, development and acquisition of generation assets, and operation of power facilities.
Position Overview
The Project Engineer will support the technical development of electric power generation projects from early concept through design and construction. The primary focus will be on natural‑gas-fueled technologies, such as:
- Combustion turbine generators (simple‑cycle and combined‑cycle)
- Reciprocating internal combustion engines
The role may also support projects involving carbon capture, CO₂ transportation, and geologic sequestration.
You will collaborate closely with internal teams-engineering, development, finance, real estate, environmental, communications, operations-and external partners including consultants, suppliers, customers, and investors.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Technical Support
- Evaluate plant configurations and layout options to improve performance.
- Conduct technology assessments and support creation of technical design criteria.
- Assist with conceptual design for power generation facilities.
- Track emerging technologies and supplier developments to inform design decisions.
Analysis & Engineering
- Prepare performance estimates (capacity, efficiency, heat balances, water usage).
- Conduct site screening, selection, and due diligence assessments.
- Develop and review project schedules.
Procurement & Documentation
- Oversee development of technical specifications for major equipment and services.
- Coordinate bid processes for engineering design, equipment supply, and construction.
- Contribute to capital and O&M cost estimates.
- Prepare technical reports and maintain organized project documentation.
General
- Support cross‑functional business teams on technical matters.
- Perform other engineering or development tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
- 2-5 years of experience in the energy sector (engineering design, technology, or operations).
- Experience with combustion turbine project design, permitting, or construction.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Effective problem solver with the ability to manage complex technical issues.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and able to thrive in fast‑paced, multi‑task environments.
- Collaborative team player capable of working independently when required.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of project engineering experience in the power industry.
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification.
- Experience supporting development‑phase power projects.
- Familiarity with Thermoflow software tools.
- Understanding of bulk electric system interconnection processes.
- Knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Experience with GIS tools.
- Programming skills (Python or Visual Basic).
