Senior Electrical Design Engineer

Position Summary

This role involves designing, bidding, overseeing, and executing electrical engineering projects. The position supports project teams by contributing to machine control concepts, project estimates, technical proposals, and client presentations. The role also includes collaborating with stakeholders to refine technical objectives and participating in system installations as needed.


Essential Functions

  • Design and specify medium-voltage (5kV-35kV) and low-voltage (120V-600V) electrical distribution systems, including substations, switchgear, MCCs, panelboards, transformers, and bus duct systems.
  • Develop power distribution systems for industrial and manufacturing environments, including automation, robotics, and process systems.
  • Create load flow models, single-line diagrams, and schematics using tools such as AutoCAD Electrical and SKM PowerTools.
  • Conduct short circuit, arc flash, and protective device coordination studies per IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E.
  • Design grounding and bonding systems per IEEE 80 and NEC Article 250.
  • Calculate fault currents, voltage drops, and ampacity for feeders and buses.
  • Provide conduit and cable schedules, voltage drop calculations, and feeder sizing per NEC standards.
  • Integrate power systems with industrial control systems (e.g., PLCs, VFDs, automation networks).
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, and local codes.
  • Coordinate with utility providers for service entrance and metering.
  • Support construction activities, including RFIs, field changes, submittal reviews, and commissioning.
  • Develop commissioning plans and perform functional testing of power systems.
  • Participate in project planning, scheduling, and scope management.
  • Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to define project goals.
  • Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain quality control and accurate documentation.
  • Drive process improvements and stay current with industry trends.
  • Represent the organization professionally and adhere to safety regulations.
  • Provide project updates and status reports to clients and leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel up to 25% may be required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in power system distribution design for industrial/manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming, HMI development, and control hardware.
  • Skilled in AutoCAD Electrical, SKM PowerTools, and vendor-specific software.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and UL standards.
  • Familiarity with OSHA construction safety requirements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to travel and perform physical tasks as needed (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, bending, etc.).

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent experience).
  • Willingness to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience with increasing responsibility.
  • Experience with Arc Flash Risk Analysis is preferred.
