Substation Designer

Responsibilities

  • Develop calculations and supporting documentation for lighting and electrical power system designs.
  • Produce design details and clarifications to clearly communicate intent on construction drawings.
  • Collaborate with clients, architects, and engineering partners to complete coordinated drawings.
  • Redline branch‑circuit lighting and power plans and complete panel schedule inputs with moderate oversight.
  • Independently apply state and local energy‑efficiency lighting requirements.
  • Follow established electrical design standards for wire sizing, feeder design, and protective devices; demonstrate working knowledge of feeder sizing with occasional support from an engineer.
  • Perform lighting calculations and lay out fixtures for typical project spaces; seek engineering input for specialty or architecturally sensitive environments.
  • Select appropriate lighting fixtures and controls using approved standards or project‑specific product lines.
  • Calculate electrical loads, size feeders, and develop preliminary demand load summaries for distribution systems.
  • Coordinate design efforts with all related trades, including architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, vertical transportation, food service, and specialty systems.
  • Create installation details necessary for construction.
  • Conduct short‑circuit evaluations.
  • Reference and interpret the National Electrical Code as needed.
  • Participate in design coordination meetings with clients, architects, and mechanical teams.
  • Work with the project management team to ensure design decisions align with budget goals.
  • Provide direction to low‑voltage and specialty system subcontractors with support as needed.
  • Review and verify the accuracy and completeness of personal work as well as that of junior designers before forwarding for further review.
  • Perform thorough field investigations and site surveys.
  • Support limited coordination tasks with other trades throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to support the role and project requirements.
