Overview
The Manager of Grid Operations is responsible for leading the strategic and day-to-day functions of a utility's system operations division. This role oversees 24/7 grid operations, ensuring reliability, safety, and efficiency in real-time electric system management. The position includes leadership of operational staff, coordination with engineering and IT teams, and oversight of power supply planning and procurement.
Reporting Structure
Reports to: Director of Electric Operations
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly manages a team of system operators, trainees, and dispatch personnel. Responsible for staffing, performance management, and professional development within the division.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the daily operations of the electric grid, including real-time monitoring, dispatch, and response coordination.
- Develop and implement operational policies, staffing strategies, and budget plans.
- Forecast short- and medium-term energy demand and determine the most cost-effective power supply mix.
- Negotiate and manage power purchase agreements with external suppliers and market participants.
- Collaborate with engineering and IT departments on system upgrades, stability analysis, and technology integration.
- Maintain compliance with applicable reliability standards and participate in regulatory audits and reporting.
- Serve as a liaison with regional and national reliability organizations and represent the utility in relevant industry groups.
- Prepare and manage the department's annual operating and capital budgets.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in electric utility operations, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
Certifications & Licenses
- NERC certification (Balancing and Transmission Operator or Reliability Coordinator level) required.
- Valid driver's license required.

- This position is not part of an on-call rotation but may require availability during critical events or emergencies.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and industry standards (e.g., NERC, regional reliability councils) is essential.
