Asphalt Foreman
We've partnered with a Michigan-based civil contractor specializing in site development, earthmoving, road building, underground utilities & infrastructure. The firm delivers work for public agencies (including MDOT and local municipalities) and private/industrial clients. To support a strong pipeline of work, we're seeking an experienced Asphalt Paving Foreman to lead crews and deliver smooth projects on schedule.
Position Summary
As Asphalt Paving Foreman, you'll be the on-site leader for HMA paving operations-from pre-pave planning and setup to compaction, joint construction, and final punch-out. You'll coordinate crew members, trucking, material delivery, equipment, and traffic control to achieve target yields, density, and smoothness while upholding safety and environmental standards. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring deep knowledge of paving best practices, MDOT specifications, and the ability to keep a fast-moving job running safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Paving Operations & Field Management
- Lead daily paving activities: paver setup, screed control, joint matching, laydown, and compaction (breakdown/intermediate/finish).
- Plan and schedule manpower, equipment, and trucking; coordinate with the asphalt plant, milling crews, and project stakeholders.
- Verify grade, cross-slope, line, and thickness; set and adjust screed, automation/grade & slope controls (stringline or stringless).
- Ensure proper surface prep: cleaning, patching, leveling, and tack/prime application rates prior to paving.
- Monitor material temperature, segregation, and yield; track tons, spread rate (lb/sy or t/sy), and depth to budget.
- Establish and optimize rolling patterns to meet density/smoothness targets; coordinate mat and longitudinal/transverse joints.
- Coordinate traffic control (setups, switchovers, flagging) in accordance with MUTCD and project plans.
- Oversee daily equipment checks and housekeeping for pavers, MTVs/shuttle buggies, rollers, tack distributors, skid steers, and related tools.
- Adjust means/methods for weather, site access, utilities, and changing conditions to maintain production and quality.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Enforce a strong safety culture: conduct daily JSAs/JHAs, weekly safety meetings, and continuous hazard recognition.
- Ensure adherence to OSHA, company policies, and project-specific safety plans; coordinate incident/near-miss reporting with Safety.
- Uphold MDOT/local specifications for HMA mixes, joints, compaction, and smoothness/IRI requirements.
- Partner with QC/QA on nuclear gauge testing, cores, density, and temperature documentation; implement corrective actions promptly.
- Maintain accurate daily logs, production reports, truck tickets, yield tracking, and punch lists; assist with as-built notes as needed.
- Support environmental compliance (e.g., SWPPP/erosion & sediment controls) around paving and prep areas.
Leadership & Communication
- Set clear expectations, assign tasks, and mentor operators, laborers, and roller hands-building a high-performing paving crew.
- Serve as the primary on-site contact with the Superintendent/Project Manager, inspectors, and owners; resolve field issues quickly.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and accountability aligned with company values.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proven leadership experience as a Paving Foreman or Lead Operator on roadway/site paving projects.
- Strong knowledge of asphalt paving best practices: screed setup, automation, yield calculations, joint construction, and compaction.
- Ability to read plans, interpret grades/cross-sections, and execute to specifications (MDOT and municipal).
- Excellent communication, organization, and real-time problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, production environment.
- Proficiency with basic construction software/tools for reporting and communication (e.g., HeavyJob or similar, Microsoft Excel, Outlook).
- Understanding of traffic control requirements and safe work-zone practices.
- Valid driver's license; CDL (A/B) preferred.
- Willingness to travel to various job sites across Michigan; ability to work extended hours, nights, and weekends during paving season.
- Physically able to lift up to 100 lbs, work on uneven terrain, and tolerate heat, fumes, and vibration from paving equipment.

- OSHA 30 and First Aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain within a defined timeframe).
- Experience with estimating takeoffs, production tracking, and cost control is a plus.
- Familiarity with MDOT specifications, density/smoothness requirements, and municipal standards strongly preferred.
Benefits
- Competitive hourly rate with performance-based bonuses.
- Comprehensive health coverage: medical, dental, vision, prescription.
- Short- and long-term disability and life insurance.
- 401(k) with company match.
