Company Overview:

We are working with a well established regional contractor based in Sioux Falls, known for delivering site preparation, underground utilities, demolition, excavation, grading, hauling, and asphalt paving work across commercial, industrial, municipal, and infrastructure markets. The company has continued to expand its capabilities, including asphalt paving, and is focused on providing safe, high quality, cost efficient project delivery for its clients.

Position Summary:

Our client is seeking an experienced Safety Director to lead and strengthen safety programs across the company's field operations, shop, yard, and project sites. This role will be responsible for building a proactive safety culture, supporting field teams, maintaining compliance, and ensuring employees have the training, tools, and guidance needed to work safely every day.

This is a strong opportunity for someone with construction safety experience who enjoys being visible in the field, working directly with crews, and helping a growing contractor keep safety at the center of daily operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain company safety programs, policies, and procedures
  • Perform regular jobsite, yard, and facility safety inspections
  • Work closely with field leaders, project managers, crews, and operators to identify and reduce risk
  • Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, orientations, and ongoing employee training
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, environmental, and company safety requirements
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety concerns, then recommend corrective actions
  • Maintain accurate safety records, training documentation, incident reports, and compliance files
  • Support safety planning for excavation, utilities, demolition, grading, paving, hauling, and equipment-heavy scopes
  • Partner with leadership to improve safety performance across all divisions
  • Promote a practical, field-focused safety culture built on accountability and communication

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of safety experience in construction, heavy civil, excavation, utilities, paving, or a related field preferred
  • Strong understanding of OSHA standards and construction safety best practices
  • Experience supporting field crews, equipment operators, truck drivers, mechanics, and project teams
  • Knowledge of excavation safety, trenching, traffic control, heavy equipment, and site safety procedures preferred
  • Ability to conduct safety audits, lead training, and manage incident investigations
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to connect well with both field and office teams
  • Organized, proactive, and comfortable managing documentation and compliance requirements
  • OSHA 30 required or preferred depending on experience
  • CHST, CSP, First Aid, CPR, or other safety certifications are a plus
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as needed
