Principal Consultant (Natural Resources)

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and innovative Principal Biologist to lead complex biological research initiatives and environmental assessments in the San Diego region. This role will oversee multidisciplinary projects, mentor junior scientists, and collaborate with regulatory agencies, academic institutions, and internal stakeholders to advance biological understanding and conservation efforts.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and design biological studies related to ecology, conservation, and environmental impact.
  • Develop and implement research methodologies, ensuring scientific rigor and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage fieldwork operations including species surveys, habitat assessments, and ecological monitoring.
  • Analyze biological data and produce high-quality technical reports and publications.
  • Serve as the primary biological expert in client meetings, public hearings, and regulatory consultations.
  • Guide and mentor a team of biologists and technicians, fostering professional development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including GIS analysts, environmental planners, and engineers.
  • Stay current with federal, state, and local environmental regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, ESA).
  • Represent the organization in scientific conferences and stakeholder engagements.
  • Support business development efforts by identifying new opportunities, contributing to proposals, and building client relationships.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in biological research or environmental consulting.
  • Proven leadership in managing large-scale biological or ecological projects.
  • Strong knowledge of California ecosystems, flora, and fauna.
  • Experience with regulatory permitting and compliance (e.g., USFWS, CDFW).
  • Demonstrated experience in business development, including proposal writing, client engagement, and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and GIS software is a plus.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions and travel as needed.
