Position Summary
The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design of Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar PV systems including ground-mount, canopy, and rooftop installations, as well as energy storage solutions. This role spans the entire design lifecycle, from initial concept through to as-built documentation, and includes construction support, equipment evaluation, and process optimization. The Senior Design Engineer also oversees project coordination, mentors junior staff, and ensures all designs meet applicable codes and standards.
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Design solar PV systems (canopy, ground-mount, rooftop) using AutoCAD, ensuring compliance with NEC and permitting requirements.
- Develop electrical single-line diagrams for review and stamping by a Professional Engineer (PE).
- Serve as the technical lead in project coordination meetings-both internal and external-for complex projects (e.g., >500kW AC, BESS, EV charging, repowering).
- Collaborate with the Regulatory team to manage utility revisions during the interconnection process.
- Produce detailed site plans and construction documentation for advanced project phases, including equipment pad layouts, switchgear elevations, grounding and inverter racking details, and BESS pad designs.
- Create as-built documentation upon project completion.
- Generate site plans showing equipment and transformer pad locations, trench routes, and interconnection points.
- Provide ongoing technical support to the construction team through project completion.
- Address RFIs, resolve technical issues, review submittals, participate in weekly construction calls, and assist with project closeout.
- Review and approve equipment specifications and drawings for procurement; ensure constructability and code compliance in all project documentation.
- Contribute to research and evaluation of new products and technologies.
- Lead initiatives to improve design and engineering processes.
- Build and maintain relationships with vendors and engineering consultants throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support training efforts within the engineering team and contribute to the development of design libraries.
- Conduct site visits during construction to assess project progress and quality.
- Perform system modeling and design using Helioscope and PVSyst, as needed.
- Mentor and guide Design Engineers and Interns.
Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in C&I solar PV design and engineering.
- At least 1 year of experience with energy storage systems.
- Strong proficiency in developing electrical single-line diagrams.
- Ability to create point-to-point diagrams for PV and storage monitoring systems (preferred).
- NABCEP PV Design or Installation Certification (preferred).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Salesforce, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with Helioscope and PVSyst (preferred).
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to manage multiple projects independently and efficiently.
- Professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills; comfortable interacting with clients, utilities, and cross-functional teams.
Special Requirements
- Occasional travel within Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut may be required.
