Senior Restoration Engineer

Full-Time | Oakland/ SF Bay Area |

Compensation: $125,000 - 200,000

About the Firm

Our client is a nimble, purpose-driven environmental engineering and design practice based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The firm brings together engineers, applied scientists, and creative problem-solvers who are united by a shared conviction: that rigorous technical work and environmental stewardship are not competing goals but mutually reinforcing ones. Their portfolio spans large-scale ecosystem recovery, aquatic connectivity, floodplain rehabilitation, and community resilience projects across California and the broader Pacific Northwest. The culture is built on trust, autonomy, and genuine collaboration-flat in structure, high in ambition, and free of the bureaucratic overhead that slows many larger consultancies.

The Opportunity

This is a senior leadership role for a licensed engineer who wants to do work that tangibly improves the health of waterways, landscapes, and the species that depend on them. The position carries real influence-technical, strategic, and organizational-and offers the chance to shape how the firm approaches its most complex and consequential engagements.

The successful candidate will direct the engineering design of large-scale stream corridor, wetland, and watershed recovery projects from concept through construction documents. They will also play a pivotal role in growing the firm's technical bench by mentoring early-career staff and strengthening internal design capabilities.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Direct the engineering analysis and design of stream channel reconfiguration, floodplain reconnection, wetland creation, and watershed-scale rehabilitation projects
  • Develop aquatic passage and barrier remediation solutions that contribute directly to native species conservation and population recovery goals
  • Oversee the production of construction-ready plan sets, technical specifications, quantity take-offs, and cost projections for capital projects
  • Provide senior-level technical review and quality assurance across the firm's active project portfolio

Strategy & Project Delivery

  • Define project direction, assemble and lead cross-disciplinary teams, and ensure deliverables meet the firm's standard of excellence
  • Manage project scope, schedule, and budget on multiple concurrent engagements, coordinating with agency partners, subconsultants, and community stakeholders
  • Contribute to business development by supporting proposal efforts, cultivating client relationships, and identifying new opportunities aligned with the firm's mission

Mentorship & Culture

  • Coach and develop junior and mid-level engineers, building technical depth and expanding the team's design capacity over time
  • Help shape firm-wide practices, standards, and workflows as the organization continues to grow
  • Champion a collaborative, inclusive team dynamic that reflects the firm's values

Ideal Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) registration in California
  • 10+ years of experience in civil or environmental engineering consulting, public infrastructure, or a comparable practice setting
  • Minimum 5 years leading design projects through full plan-specification-estimate development cycles
  • Strong background in the design of in-stream hydraulic structures, channel stabilization, and open-channel conveyance systems
  • Proficiency directing staff in civil design and drafting platforms, including surface modeling, grading design, and earthwork calculations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder projects and deliver consistently high-quality outcomes on schedule and within budget
  • Collegiate, respectful communication style and genuine enthusiasm for working across disciplines and backgrounds

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Track record of preparing construction documents, technical memoranda, and detailed cost analyses for capital improvement projects
  • Experience scoping, scheduling, and budgeting engineering engagements from proposal through closeout
  • Familiarity with open-channel hydraulic simulation tools used in floodplain and river corridor design
  • Direct involvement in aquatic organism passage design or stream corridor rehabilitation
  • Proven client relationship skills and comfort presenting to agency boards, stakeholder groups, and regulatory bodies
  • A genuine commitment to investing in the professional growth of early-career colleagues

Why This Role

  • Purpose-driven work that delivers measurable ecological outcomes for degraded waterways and the communities that depend on them
  • A flat, trust-based culture where senior professionals have genuine agency over project direction and firm strategy
  • The opportunity to grow a team, deepen a practice area, and leave a mark on how environmental infrastructure is designed in the West
  • Competitive compensation paired with meaningful investment in professional growth and long-term career development
