Transportation Drainage Engineer | Houston

Overview:
Our client, a leading Texas transportation engineering consultancy, is seeking a Transportation Drainage Engineer to support major roadway, highway, and municipal infrastructure programs across the Houston region. This role focuses on hydrology/hydraulics (H&H), drainage design, modeling, and PS&E development for TxDOT and local agency projects.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or support roadway/highway drainage design for transportation projects including:
    • Storm drain systems
    • Cross‑culverts and bridge-class culverts
    • Detention/retention design
    • Open-channel design
    • Hydrologic & hydraulic modeling
  • Prepare drainage reports, technical memoranda, and supporting analyses.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) in accordance with TxDOT standards.
  • Coordinate with roadway, structures, survey, and environmental teams to ensure drainage design integration.
  • Perform modeling using tools such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HY-8, StormCAD, CivilStorm, GEOPAK/ OpenRoads Drainage, or similar.
  • Assist with client coordination, scoping, scheduling, and QA/QC reviews.
  • Provide occasional field support for drainage assessments and site investigations.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering (Water Resources or Transportation focus preferred).
  • 3-10+ years of experience in drainage design for transportation projects.
  • Proficiency in hydrology/hydraulics modeling and drainage CAD platforms.
  • Strong familiarity with TxDOT Drainage Manual and TxDOT design processes.
  • Experience preparing PS&E packages for TxDOT or local municipalities.
  • EIT required; Texas PE preferred or ability to obtain within 6-12 months.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Houston-area hydrology (HCFCD, NOAA Atlas 14, Harris County standards).
  • Hands-on modeling experience in both steady-state and unsteady flow.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers or lead small drainage design tasks.
  • Familiarity with alternative delivery (Design-Build/CMAR) projects.

Location

  • Houston, TX - hybrid flexibility available depending on project workload.
