Building Automation Estimator (Fully Remote)
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Building Automation Estimator to join our growing team. This is a fully remote position, offering the opportunity to work on a diverse range of building automation and controls projects across multiple industries.
The ideal candidate brings a strong background in Building Automation Systems (BAS), practical field or engineering experience, and the ability to develop accurate, competitive project estimates. This role plays a critical part in supporting business development, ensuring project success from the earliest stages.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed and accurate cost estimates for building automation and controls projects, including new construction, retrofits, and system upgrades
- Analyze project drawings, specifications, sequences of operation, and bid documents to determine scope and requirements
- Perform detailed takeoffs covering controllers, sensors, networking components, wiring, panels, and associated materials
- Build labor estimates based on project complexity, site conditions, and installation requirements
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing to ensure competitive and realistic proposals
- Work closely with sales, engineering, and project management teams to align estimates with technical and commercial strategies
- Identify risks, scope gaps, and value engineering opportunities to improve bid competitiveness and project profitability
- Prepare professional proposals and bid packages, including scope narratives and clarifications
- Maintain and continuously improve estimating databases, cost libraries, and standard templates
- Support handoff to execution teams by ensuring clarity and completeness of awarded project scope
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in the building automation / controls industry
- Solid working knowledge of BAS/DDC systems, with familiarity across at least one or more platforms such as:
- Delta Controls
- Johnson Controls (Metasys)
- Siemens (Desigo / Apogee)
- Honeywell
- Tridium Niagara
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, and control strategies
- Experience reviewing construction documents, including mechanical plans, controls diagrams, and specifications
- Ability to perform accurate material and labor takeoffs
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while managing multiple deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in an estimating, preconstruction, or applications engineering role
- Exposure to multiple BAS/DDC platforms and system integrations
- Working knowledge of communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks
- Experience with energy efficiency projects, retro-commissioning, or optimization initiatives
- Familiarity with estimating or takeoff software tools
- Understanding of panel design, network architecture, and system scalability considerations
