Summary:
This role is for a senior-level Controls Engineer specializing in custom automation solutions. The position involves designing and developing electrical systems and programming for custom automation machinery, primarily serving industries such as medical and life sciences. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously with a hands-on, detail-oriented, and self-motivated approach.
The Engineer will lead all aspects of controls engineering tasks required to deliver custom solutions that meet project requirements. The role demands innovation, precision, and a commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design clean-sheet automation systems from concept through production.
- Translate customer requirements into design specifications, evaluate feasibility, and provide technical expertise.
- Develop electrical systems for custom automation solutions, ensuring functionality, efficiency, and reliability.
- Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, robotics, safety devices, vision systems, and other control components.
- Conduct testing and validation of control systems to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
- Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and maintenance phases.
- Source and program motors, drives, actuators, robots, sensors, and servo controls.
- Perform full system programming, testing, debugging, commissioning, installation, service, and upgrades.
- Create electrical schematics and panel layouts; review and update drawings as required.
- Prepare and verify detailed bills of materials; alert purchasing of long-lead items.
- Maintain project schedules and achieve cost targets through effective design.
- Identify high-risk areas during project quoting and support operations during build and evaluation.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with sales calls and provide technical expertise to customers.
Experience & Key Skills:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in designing, programming, and implementing control systems for custom automation projects.
- Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams to integrate control systems into automation projects.
- Proficiency in PLC and HMI programming, with expertise in Allen Bradley systems.
- Experience with robotics, vision systems, sensors, servo controls, and industrial networking.
- Competence in AutoCAD Electrical and electrical component selection.
- Excellent documentation, communication, and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently with a self-driven and detail-oriented approach.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Education Requirements:
- BSEE or BSEET with 5+ years of experience in industrial automation and controls development.
- ASEE or ASEET with 10+ years of experience in industrial automation and controls development.
- Other degrees with relevant experience will be considered.

Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
- Sit for extended periods; occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Normal visual and hearing requirements for reading instructions and verbal communication.
- Work in a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to loud noise.
