Land Development Engineer

Our client is a national engineering and consulting firm founded in the early 2000s by an engineer who set out to build a practice defined by technical quality, ethical delivery, and genuine investment in the communities it works in. What began as a single Indianapolis practice has grown into a multi office platform with a presence across the Midwest, South, Mountain West, East Coast, and Pacific Northwest, while keeping its headquarters and its cultural center of gravity in Indianapolis.

It is a certified DBE/MBE firm and has been recognized as one of Indiana's "Best Places to Work" for eight consecutive years, which tells you most of what you need to know about retention and how people are treated once they are through the door.

The Work

Core competencies span civil engineering, landscape architecture, and construction services, with supporting strength in water resources, transportation, and aviation. The civil group delivers a genuinely mixed portfolio: commercial, residential, mixed use, institutional, and infrastructure projects, ranging from private development sites through to public sector and high profile municipal programs. Their delivery model is built around understanding the client's vision first, then applying multidisciplinary expertise and structured QA/QC through design and construction.

Role Overview

This is a technical leadership position for a licensed civil engineer with a strong site civil and land development background. You will lead design on your own projects, act as a technical resource for project managers across the group, and take a real hand in developing the junior engineers coming up behind you. It suits someone who wants depth and ownership rather than a narrow production role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as technical lead on site civil and land development projects
  • Prepare and oversee site design covering grading, drainage, stormwater management, utilities, and roadway improvements
  • Lead the development of construction documents, calculations, and technical exhibits
  • Perform and review hydrology and hydraulic analyses and stormwater management design
  • Support entitlement and permitting with local jurisdictions and reviewing agencies
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines, subconsultants, and project managers
  • Review junior engineers' work and provide technical guidance and mentorship
  • Attend client meetings and respond to agency review comments
  • Apply local, state, and federal codes and design standards, and support quality control across deliverables

Qualifications and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Roughly 6 to 9 years of site civil / land development design experience, with scope to flex either side for the right person
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical design tasks and coordinating project teams
  • Solid grounding in grading, drainage, utilities, stormwater design, and permitting
  • Familiarity with local jurisdictional standards and permitting processes
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills, with the ability to run several projects at once

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary of $90,000 to $140,000 depending on experience and licensure
  • Performance management bonus program based on merit and company profitability
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, effective the first of the month following 30 days
  • 401(k) retirement savings and profit sharing plan with a 4% company match after six months
  • Paid time off plus nine paid holidays annually
  • Employer paid short term and long term disability, and life insurance at 2x base salary
  • Additional PTO for the birth, adoption, or placement of a child
  • Continuing education and professional development programs, including support toward licensure
  • Employee assistance program, free from date of hire
  • Hybrid working with three fixed core in office days to keep teams connected
