Fully Remote | U.S.-Based | PE Preferred

Overview

We are supporting a growing engineering team seeking an experienced Substation Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer to support utility and substation projects across the U.S. This is a fully remote position with a fast-moving interview process.

This role is open to senior individual contributors and may also be suitable for a Team Lead-level engineer with strong relay settings and mentoring experience.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop protection and control designs for high-voltage substations (typically 4kV-500kV)
  • Perform protective relay settings calculations, coordination studies, and functional testing
  • Create and review:
    • Protection & control schematics
    • Wiring diagrams and panel layouts
    • One-lines, three-lines, and AC/DC schematics
  • Support utility, transmission, distribution, and renewable interconnection projects
  • Review vendor drawings, relay logic, and protection philosophies
  • Participate in design reviews, client meetings, and technical discussions
  • Provide guidance to junior engineers (for senior / lead-level candidates)

Team Lead Scope (if applicable):

  • Technical oversight of P&C design teams
  • Mentorship and QA/QC of relay settings and design packages
  • Coordination with project managers and clients
  • Support work planning, resourcing, and technical standards

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of Substation Protection & Controls experience
  • Strong experience with protective relaying and relay settings
  • Familiarity with major relay platforms (SEL, ABB, GE, Schweitzer, etc.)
  • Experience working with U.S. utilities or utility-scale projects
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (highly preferred)
  • Prior technical lead or mentoring experience
  • Experience supporting multiple projects in parallel
  • Knowledge of NERC, IEEE, and utility standards
