Principal Hydrogeologist
Position Overview
As a Principal Hydrogeologist you will serve as a senior technical leader responsible for overseeing complex hydrogeologic investigations, groundwater modeling, water resource management projects, and environmental assessments. This role provides strategic technical guidance, leads multidisciplinary project teams, and supports business development through client engagement and thought leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
- Lead and oversee advanced hydrogeologic assessments, including aquifer characterization, groundwater flow and transport modeling, and water supply evaluations.
- Develop, review, and approve technical work products such as conceptual site models, reports, remedial strategies, and regulatory submittals.
- Design and guide field programs, including drilling oversight, well installation, aquifer testing, and groundwater sampling.
- Apply expertise in groundwater/surface water interactions, contaminant hydrogeology, geochemistry, and basin-scale water resource management.
Project & Program Management
- Manage large, complex projects from proposal through execution, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to defined quality standards.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, subcontractors, and external partners.
- Oversee project financials, resource planning, and risk management.
Regulatory & Compliance
- Interpret and apply federal, state, and local environmental regulations related to groundwater, water rights, and site remediation.
- Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert during regulatory negotiations and stakeholder meetings.
- Prepare and present findings to regulatory agencies, water authorities, and community groups.
Client & Business Development
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, and key stakeholders.
- Identify new project opportunities and contribute to proposal development and strategic planning.
- Represent the organization at industry conferences, working groups, and technical forums.
Mentorship & Team Development
- Mentor junior and mid-level hydrogeologists, providing technical coaching and career development guidance.
- Support recruitment and training initiatives for the hydrogeology and environmental services teams.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration.
Qualifications
Education
- Master's or Ph.D. in Hydrogeology, Geology, Geological Engineering, or related field.
Experience
- 12+ years of progressive hydrogeology or water resources experience, including leadership of complex technical programs.
- Demonstrated expertise in groundwater modeling (e.g., MODFLOW, MT3DMS, FEFLOW), hydrogeologic field methods, and environmental site investigation.
- Proven track record of managing client relationships and winning new work.
Certifications (Preferred/Required Based on Region)
- Professional Geologist (PG), Certified Hydrogeologist (CHG), Registered Professional Geologist (RPG), or equivalent credential.
