Substation Engineer (Chicago, IL)
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop engineering designs and technical specifications for substation projects ranging from 15kV to 345kV.
- Prepare and review one-line diagrams, physical layouts, grounding plans, and protection & control schematics.
- Perform calculations for short circuit, load flow, grounding, and equipment sizing.
- Coordinate with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders to ensure project alignment and timely delivery.
- Support construction and commissioning activities with technical guidance and field support.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC), and utility requirements.
- Assist in preparing cost estimates, schedules, and bid packages.
- Participate in quality assurance reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in substation design and automation.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in substation engineering or related power systems work.
- EIT certification required; PE license preferred or in progress.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and engineering analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM).
- Strong understanding of protection and control systems, SCADA, and relay coordination.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with utility standards and interconnection processes.
- Familiarity with project management tools and workflows.
- Exposure to digital substations and IEC 61850 protocols.
- Field experience in construction or commissioning is a plus.
