Substation Engineering Manager / Director
About the Opportunity
A nationally recognized engineering consulting organization is seeking a Substation Engineering Manager / Director with strong experience in both Physical Substation Design and Protection & Control (P&C) Engineering. This leadership role will oversee a team of substation engineers while driving the successful execution of transmission and substation projects across utility, renewable energy, infrastructure, and grid modernization markets.
This position offers the opportunity to lead technical teams, mentor engineers, and influence the delivery of complex high-voltage projects ranging from distribution-level facilities through EHV transmission substations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of approximately 10 substation engineering professionals.
- Partner closely with Project Managers to ensure successful project execution, technical delivery, staffing, and resource planning.
- Develop and implement technical project execution strategies.
- Assign project responsibilities and provide technical guidance to engineering team members.
- Support project planning activities, including scope development, schedules, budgets, risk mitigation, work planning, and change management.
- Mentor Project Engineers, EITs, Designers, and technical staff.
- Perform and coordinate technical reviews and quality assurance checks for engineering deliverables.
- Lead multiple projects simultaneously while coordinating teams across various office locations.
- Collaborate with senior technical leaders to advance engineering capabilities and technical excellence initiatives.
- Support business development efforts through proposal support, technical presentations, conference participation, and industry engagement.
- Participate in project reviews and technical oversight meetings.
- Drive a culture focused on safety, quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License required.
- Prior experience leading project execution within the electric utility, transmission, or power delivery industry.
- Strong understanding of substation engineering principles and project delivery processes.
- Experience with both:
- Physical Substation Design
- Protection & Control (P&C) Design
- Experience utilizing common engineering and design software such as:
- AutoCAD
- Revit
- PLS-CADD
- Plant 3D
- AutoPIPE
- Similar industry-standard design tools
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams and technical project execution.
- Excellent communication and client-facing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Engineering.
- Experience working within consulting engineering environments.
- Minimum of 8+ years of technical design experience involving high-voltage substations and switchyards.
- Experience supporting projects from approximately 12kV through 500kV; exposure to EHV projects up to 765kV is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of:
- IEEE Standards
- ANSI Standards
- NESC Requirements
- Industry design and equipment standards
- Understanding of physical, electrical, civil, and structural components of substation design.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with geographically dispersed teams and stakeholders.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
- Self-motivated with excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
