Transmission Planning Engineer

Overview

An electric transmission infrastructure owner and operator is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to support system reliability, grid expansion studies, and regulatory compliance initiatives. This individual will perform transmission planning analyses, evaluate interconnection requests, support long-term capital planning efforts, and collaborate with regional grid stakeholders. The role works closely with utilities, developers, consultants, and reliability organizations while contributing to transmission planning and operational compliance programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical analysis and engineering support to maintain reliable transmission system performance and ensure compliance with applicable reliability and planning requirements.
  • Identify and evaluate transmission development opportunities through planning studies and industry engagement.
  • Perform power system studies including:
    • Steady-State Load Flow Analysis
    • Short Circuit Studies
    • Dynamic and Stability Assessments
  • Develop and maintain transmission system models used for regional planning activities and reliability assessments.
  • Manage transmission planning, generation interconnection, and large load interconnection projects from technical evaluation through stakeholder coordination.
  • Participate in regional planning and industry working groups, representing the organization on transmission reliability and grid expansion matters.
  • Review planning processes, technical requirements, and operational procedures to ensure alignment with regulatory and reliability frameworks.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, utilities, project developers, consultants, and regional transmission stakeholders on grid planning initiatives.
  • Support ongoing compliance efforts related to transmission planning and system operations functions.
  • Contribute to special projects and additional engineering initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in transmission planning, power system analysis, or related utility/consulting environments.
  • Experience supporting transmission service providers, utilities, independent system operators, or regional transmission organizations is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard power system analysis software such as:
    • PSS®E
    • PowerWorld
    • TARA
    • ASPEN OneLiner
  • Strong understanding of transmission planning methodologies, reliability standards, and interconnection processes.
  • Familiarity with NERC reliability standards, FERC regulations, and regional transmission planning practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

Preferred Background

  • Experience performing transmission planning studies within a regulated utility, transmission owner, transmission developer, consulting firm, or regional grid operator.
  • Exposure to generation interconnection studies, large load interconnection assessments, and long-range transmission expansion planning.
  • Participation in regional stakeholder committees, planning groups, or industry working groups is a plus.
