Position Overview
The General Superintendent is responsible for leading field operations on large, complex construction projects from planning through completion. This role oversees project teams, drives construction sequencing and execution strategies, manages site operations, and ensures projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards. The position requires strong leadership, independent decision-making, and the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders while maintaining operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Project Execution
- Provide overall leadership and direction for field operations on large-scale construction projects.
- Develop and implement project execution plans, construction sequencing, and site logistics strategies.
- Manage and coordinate field staff, trade partners, suppliers, and project resources.
- Oversee daily construction activities to ensure productivity, safety, quality, and schedule performance.
- Lead daily coordination meetings, trade partner meetings, and progress reviews.
- Collaborate with project management teams to develop, monitor, and update project schedules.
- Monitor workforce productivity and adjust operations as needed to achieve project objectives.
Safety & Quality Management
- Promote a culture of safety and accountability throughout all project activities.
- Conduct safety reviews, address incidents, and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with project safety requirements and regulatory standards.
- Oversee quality assurance and quality control efforts to maintain project specifications and performance standards.
Schedule, Cost & Resource Management
- Assist with project planning, staffing, budgeting, procurement, and resource allocation.
- Monitor construction progress, production rates, labor productivity, and field costs.
- Coordinate material procurement, equipment needs, and site logistics.
- Support project teams in evaluating schedule impacts and cost implications of project changes.
- Manage labor reporting, timekeeping processes, and field cost tracking.
Communication & Coordination
- Serve as a key point of communication between field operations, project management, consultants, trade partners, and project stakeholders.
- Maintain project documentation including reports, schedules, inspections, logs, and field records.
- Participate in project reviews, planning sessions, procurement meetings, and progress updates.
- Assist with change management and coordination efforts throughout the project lifecycle.
Project Closeout & Continuous Improvement
- Lead punch list, commissioning support, and project closeout activities.
- Partner with operations leadership to develop staffing strategies and project execution plans.
- Mentor and develop field personnel while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
- Support training initiatives and operational best practices across project teams.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts focused on safety, quality, productivity, and project execution.
Senior Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide oversight for large, highly complex projects exceeding $100M in construction value.
- Manage multiple projects and field teams simultaneously when required.
- Support regional and operational initiatives that drive organizational performance.
- Assist in developing training programs and field leadership resources.
- Communicate strategic objectives and operational priorities across project teams and stakeholders.
- Help identify, develop, and mentor future field leaders within the organization.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of commercial construction means, methods, and sequencing.
- Strong leadership, team development, and communication skills.
- Ability to effectively manage large, fast-paced construction projects.
- Experience with scheduling software, project management platforms, and construction technology tools.
- Strong understanding of budgeting, cost control, labor productivity, and project financial performance.
- Knowledge of quality management programs and construction best practices.
- Experience coordinating multiple trades and self-perform construction activities.
- Ability to evaluate project risks and implement proactive solutions.
- Understanding of contract requirements, change management, and project controls.
- Knowledge of site layout, crane operations, rigging, and advanced field operations.
- Experience applying Lean construction principles preferred.
- Strong relationship-building skills with internal teams, consultants, trade partners, and project stakeholders.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience Requirements
- 12+ years of commercial construction experience.
- 10+ years of field leadership or superintendent experience.
- Demonstrated success managing large-scale commercial construction projects.
- Experience leading aviation construction projects valued at $100M+ required.
- Experience implementing Lean construction methodologies preferred.
