My client is seeking a knowledgeable and dynamic Chief Building Official to lead their Building Division. This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the safety, integrity, and compliance of all construction activities within the city.

Position Summary

Under general direction, the Chief Building Official plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Building Division, including permitting, inspections, plan reviews, and code enforcement. This position ensures compliance with local, state, and federal building codes and ordinances, and provides expert guidance to staff, developers, and the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise building inspectors, plan reviewers, and administrative staff.
  • Oversee the enforcement of building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire, and energy codes.
  • Review and approve complex building plans and specifications.
  • Provide technical code interpretation and guidance to staff, contractors, and the public.
  • Coordinate with other departments on development and construction projects.
  • Prepare and manage the division's budget and strategic goals.
  • Represent the city at public meetings and hearings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in building inspection, plan review, or construction, including 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Certification: Must possess an ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) credential.
  • Strong knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) and Arizona-specific building regulations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in Arizona municipalities or counties.
  • Additional ICC certifications (e.g., Plans Examiner, Building Inspector).
  • Familiarity with permitting software and digital plan review systems.
