Data Center Engineer
The Data Center Whitespace Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, and operational management of whitespace areas within a mission-critical data center. This role ensures optimal utilization of rack space, power, and cooling capacity to support IT deployments. The Whitespace Engineer collaborates with IT, facilities, and operations teams to manage infrastructure layouts, implement capacity planning, and maintain compliance with safety, security, and operational standards.
Design & Planning
- Develop and maintain whitespace layouts for server racks, network gear, and supporting infrastructure.
- Conduct capacity planning for space, power, and cooling utilization to optimize deployments.
- Prepare rack elevations, cabling plans, and equipment placement diagrams using CAD/DCIM tools.
- Collaborate with IT deployment teams to plan new installations and migrations.
Operations & Execution
- Oversee the physical installation of equipment, ensuring adherence to standards for airflow, cable management, and load balancing.
- Perform regular audits of whitespace areas, verifying asset placement, labeling, and compliance with design documentation.
- Manage hot/cold aisle containment configurations to optimize thermal performance.
- Coordinate with facilities teams to align power distribution and cooling with IT load requirements.
Capacity & Efficiency Management
- Track whitespace utilization metrics and forecast capacity needs for future deployments.
- Provide recommendations on optimization of rack density, cable routing, and airflow management.
- Support initiatives to improve energy efficiency (PUE) and reduce operational costs.
Compliance & Documentation
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation in DCIM/asset tracking systems.
- Ensure adherence to safety, security, and environmental policies within whitespace areas.
- Support internal and external audits related to equipment layout, capacity, and compliance.
Collaboration
- Work closely with Break/Fix, Deployment, and ALM teams to coordinate hardware lifecycle activities.
- Partner with engineering and design teams for new data center builds or expansion projects.
Provide input into standards and best practices for whitespace design and management.
