Compensation: $175,000 - $215,000
We are seeking an experienced Principal Planner to lead complex environmental planning, permitting, and compliance projects across California. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a seasoned CEQA/NEPA professional who excels at managing client relationships, growing teams, driving business development, and delivering high-profile environmental projects.
As a Principal Planner, you will provide strategic oversight for large-scale planning and permitting efforts, guide multidisciplinary teams, develop regulatory and permitting strategies, and serve as a trusted advisor to both clients and staff. This role also plays a key part in practice growth through proposal development, client expansion, and mentoring the next generation of environmental professionals.
Responsibilities
- Lead complex CEQA, NEPA, permitting, and environmental compliance projects and programs.
- Serve as a senior advisor and project director on major contracts and high-profile efforts.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, quality, and client relationships.
- Develop permitting strategies and guide teams through regulatory and technical challenges.
- Support and mentor project managers, planners, and technical staff.
- Drive business development efforts, cultivate client relationships, and support proposal pursuits.
- Collaborate with leadership on staffing, operational improvements, and strategic growth initiatives.
- Help build and maintain a high-performing environmental planning practice.
Qualifications
- 20+ years of experience in environmental planning, permitting, CEQA/NEPA, or environmental compliance.
- Proven experience leading teams, managing complex programs, and delivering successful projects.
- Strong business development background and established industry relationships.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary staff and supporting professional development.
- Excellent client management, communication, and leadership skills.
- Strong understanding of California environmental regulations and permitting processes.
