One of California's most respected, employee‑owned civil engineering firms is seeking an Associate Traffic Project Engineer to join its Traffic Division in San Diego. The Opportunity

This role offers the chance to step into a growing traffic engineering group and work alongside a multi‑disciplinary team on meaningful, highly visible projects throughout the San Diego region. As an Associate Traffic Project Engineer, you'll support and lead components of complex transportation initiatives, collaborate closely with public‑sector clients, and help deliver solutions that shape future mobility.

You'll work directly with experienced engineers and leaders, gaining exposure to a wide range of traffic planning and design efforts while continuing to grow your technical depth and leadership capabilities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide independent technical judgment and decision‑making
  • Supervise and mentor traffic designers and CAD drafters/technicians
  • Assist with project management, including schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Prepare contracts, fee proposals, and scopes of work
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, public agencies, and internal teams
  • Lead and support municipal traffic engineering services, including:
    • Traffic signals
    • Signing and striping plans
    • Traffic control plans
    • Traffic Impact Analyses and related studies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE required)
  • California registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)
    • Traffic Engineer (TE) license preferred
  • 5+ years of traffic engineering experience
    • (or equivalent of 10 years total industry experience)
  • Minimum 3 years of management experience supervising traffic design staff
  • Recent Southern California experience, preferably within San Diego County
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • HCS, Vistro, Synchro, and similar traffic software
    • California Vehicle Code (CVC), MUTCD, and Highway Capacity Manual
  • Experience with transit planning and design is a plus

  • Hourly pay range: $56.50 - $69.75
