Senior Electrical Engineer - Water Infrastructure

The Opportunity

A well-established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects throughout California.

This is a hands-on technical and project leadership position focused on the design and evaluation of electrical power, lighting, instrumentation, and control systems for treatment plants, pumping facilities, reservoirs, and related municipal infrastructure.

The successful candidate will lead portions of moderately complex projects, oversee engineers and designers, coordinate with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and contribute throughout the full project life cycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead electrical design activities for water and wastewater infrastructure projects
• Prepare plans, specifications, technical reports, calculations, and design documentation
• Develop single-line diagrams, equipment layouts, schedules, and electrical details
• Design low- and medium-voltage power distribution systems
• Support the design of switchgear, transformers, MCCs, VFDs, generators, and large motor loads
• Perform or review load-flow, short-circuit, protective coordination, voltage-drop, and Arc Flash studies
• Design building power, lighting, grounding, emergency power, and control systems
• Coordinate electrical requirements for pumps, process equipment, instrumentation, PLCs, and SCADA systems
• Conduct field investigations and collect information at active operating facilities
• Support project planning, scope development, proposals, staffing, budgeting, and scheduling
• Oversee and mentor engineers and technical designers
• Manage electrical deliverables to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements
• Perform technical QA/QC reviews
• Coordinate with civil, structural, mechanical, architectural, and controls disciplines
• Communicate with clients, contractors, vendors, and subcontractors
• Provide construction-phase support, including submittal reviews, RFIs, site visits, commissioning, and startup assistance
• Help plan shutdowns, temporary power, and construction sequencing for facilities that must remain operational

• Water and wastewater treatment plant expansions and upgrades
• Pump stations, lift stations, booster stations, and reservoirs
• 480V, 5kV, and 12kV electrical distribution systems
• Motor control centers and variable frequency drives
• Large pumps, motors, and process equipment
• Standby generators and automatic transfer systems
• Electrical system modeling and power-system studies
• SCADA, PLC, telemetry, instrumentation, and communications infrastructure
• Building power, lighting, fire alarm, security, and communications systems
• Modernization of electrical systems within active treatment facilities
• Construction administration, commissioning, and startup

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
• Approximately 7-12 years of relevant electrical engineering experience
• Active California Professional Engineer license
• Experience managing projects, budgets, schedules, and technical deliverables
• Strong understanding of applicable electrical codes and industry standards
• Experience preparing electrical calculations, specifications, reports, and construction drawings
• Ability to lead technical staff and coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams
• Strong written, verbal, and client-facing communication skills
• Authorization to work in the United States without employer-sponsored visa assistance

Preferred Experience

• Electrical design experience within water or wastewater treatment facilities
• Low- and medium-voltage power distribution
• Single-line diagram development
• Switchgear, MCC, VFD, transformer, generator, and motor design
• Short-circuit, coordination, load-flow, and Arc Flash studies
• SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, AutoCAD, or similar design software
• Power, lighting, instrumentation, and control-system design
• SCADA and PLC system coordination
• NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 820, and California Electrical Code
• Construction support and commissioning within operating industrial facilities
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering
