About the Opportunity

An established environmental consulting firm is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer to support and manage complex site investigation, remediation, and regulatory compliance projects throughout California. This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects involving soil, groundwater, vapor intrusion, and remediation of impacted sites while collaborating directly with clients, regulatory agencies, and senior technical staff.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in environmental remediation, California regulatory programs and remedial engineering. A California Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred. Candidates with an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and a confirmed timeline for obtaining PE licensure may also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Manage environmental investigation and remediation projects from scoping through regulatory closure.
  • Lead technical evaluations associated with:
    • Groundwater contamination
    • Soil contamination
    • Soil vapor and vapor intrusion impacts
    • Remedial system design and implementation
  • Develop site investigation strategies to define the nature and extent of contamination.
  • Prepare, review, and oversee technicaldeliverables including:
    • Work Plans
    • Site Investigation Reports
    • Remedial Action Plans
    • Feasibility Studies
    • Monitoring Reports
    • Closure Reports
    • Regulatory correspondence
  • Design and evaluate remediation systems and corrective action alternatives.
  • Interface directly with regulatory agencies, clients, contractors, legal counsel, and internal project teams.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, financial performance, invoicing, and client communications.
  • Oversee field activities and ensure technical quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Mentor junior engineers and environmental professionals.
  • Support proposal preparation, business development efforts, and client relationship management.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in:

    • Environmental Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Geological Engineering
    • Other related engineering discipline
  • Minimum 8 years of environmental consulting, remediation, or environmental engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • California Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification with a scheduled PE examination date planned within the near future.
  • Experience working with:
    • Chlorinated solvents (PCE, TCE, and related compounds)
    • Petroleum hydrocarbons
    • Industrial chemical releases
    • Complex groundwater plume investigations
  • Experience supporting California remediation projects regulated by:
    • DTSC
    • Regional Water Quality Control Boards (RWQCBs)
    • Local oversight agencies
  • Familiarity with remediation technologies including:
    • Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE)

Ideal Background

The ideal candidate has extensive experience moving projects beyond environmental due diligence and site assessment into active remediation, corrective action implementation, and regulatory closure. Candidates whose backgrounds are primarily focused on Phase I ESAs, transaction-related Phase II investigations, or environmental compliance without remediation experience are unlikely to be a strong fit.

Particular interest will be given to professionals with experience evaluating contamination impacts, developing remediation strategies, designing corrective action systems, and managing projects involving chlorinated solvents, groundwater remediation, and vapor intrusion concerns.

What Makes This Opportunity Attractive

  • Opportunity to work on technically complex remediation and site closure projects involving groundwater, soil, and vapor-phase contaminants.
  • Exposure to challenging projects requiring innovative remediation approaches and strong regulatory strategy.
  • Join a firm recognized for site characterization, remediation design, groundwater remediation, and practical environmental problem-solving.
  • High degree of autonomy and visibility with clients, regulators, and project stakeholders.
  • Collaborative, technically focused environment where senior staff play a key role in project direction, mentoring, and growth initiatives.
