Transmission Planning Engineer
Position Overview
A growing engineering and consulting organization is seeking a Senior Transmission Planning Engineer to support transmission system studies, grid expansion initiatives, interconnection evaluations, and long-term system planning efforts across North America.
This position will serve as a technical lead on complex transmission planning projects and will work closely with utilities, developers, regional transmission organizations, and internal engineering teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing power system studies, developing planning recommendations, mentoring junior engineers, and serving as a technical advisor throughout project execution.
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required for this position and is considered a non-negotiable qualification.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead transmission planning and power system analysis projects from proposal through final delivery.
- Perform and review steady-state, contingency, transfer capability, and reliability studies.
- Conduct NERC, regional reliability, and utility planning assessments.
- Evaluate system impacts associated with new generation, load growth, data centers, renewable energy projects, and transmission expansions.
- Support generator and load interconnection studies.
- Develop solutions for thermal, voltage, stability, and reliability constraints.
- Prepare technical reports, study documentation, presentations, and client deliverables.
- Coordinate with utilities, transmission owners, developers, and regulatory stakeholders.
- Support business development efforts through proposal development, technical presentations, and client engagement.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineering staff.
- Review study assumptions, methodologies, and engineering calculations to ensure technical accuracy and quality.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in transmission planning, power systems engineering, or related utility consulting work.
- Strong understanding of bulk electric system planning and reliability requirements.
- Experience performing power flow, contingency, short-circuit, and stability studies.
- Working knowledge of NERC reliability standards and transmission planning criteria.
- Ability to independently manage technical workstreams and client interactions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- PSCAD
- TSAT
- DSA Tools
- Promod or production cost modeling software
Experience in any of the following areas is highly desirable:
- Generator interconnection studies
- Transmission expansion planning
- Renewable energy integration
- Regional transmission organization (RTO/ISO) planning processes
- Grid modernization initiatives
- Data center load studies
- Economic transmission planning
- Reactive power and voltage stability assessments
Leadership & Professional Attributes
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical lead on complex projects.
- Experience mentoring engineers and reviewing technical work products.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Client-facing consulting or utility stakeholder engagement experience preferred.
