Principal Electrical Design Engineer

Job Description

Provide essential administrative processes, technical expertise, and leadership. This position oversees a specific project area and serves as a representative of the engineering discipline, ensuring technical accuracy throughout all phases of project execution. This is a lead role responsible for complex engineering assignments on-site in Greenville, South Carolina.

  • Support the Discipline Lead Engineer and act as a Supervising Lead, guiding engineers and designers
  • Analyze and develop solutions to complex technical problems aligned with project requirements
  • Develop and review specifications and design criteria
  • Perform and verify engineering analyses, calculations, and system designs; specify materials and equipment
  • Coordinate technical issues across disciplines, project management, vendors, and clients
  • Ensure compliance with quality plans, procedures, and project scope, cost, and schedule baselines
  • Develop and review estimates, schedules, progress reports, and staffing forecasts
  • Track material quantities and provide analysis and forecasts
  • Support procurement and subcontracting activities, including scope definition, bid evaluations, and vendor reviews
  • Provide technical support during construction, including responses to RFIs and field changes
  • Perform other assigned duties

Basic Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical (Power) Engineering and around fifteen (15) years of relevant experience
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal (including government agency orders), state, and local codes and standards
  • Strong communication skills with project teams, clients, vendors, and subcontractors
  • Job-related technical expertise required to perform the role
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards
  • Ability to work in compliance with all applicable regulations, statutes, and guidelines
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently in time-sensitive environments
  • Proficiency with standard computer tools (word processing, email, spreadsheets, and presentations)

Experience Requirements

  • Significant experience providing Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services on large industrial projects
  • Proficiency executing large EPC projects using engineering analysis, 3D modeling, and 2D Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) tools in a multidisciplinary environment

Discipline-Specific Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply applicable codes, standards, and client requirements to prepare electrical design and construction documents through project startup
  • Develop and modify electrical drawings (single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, lighting, raceway, and grounding)
  • Perform complex system studies (short circuit, load flow, stability, motor starting, harmonics, relay coordination, and grounding/grid analysis)
  • Develop complex area classifications and electrical design documentation
  • Perform calculations including short circuit, relay coordination, voltage drop, cable de-rating, and cable pulling tension
  • Prepare motor schematics and wiring diagrams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience designing systems, structures, and components for regulated or high-compliance facilities under established engineering standards
  • Advanced knowledge of material availability and cost considerations
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing large projects
  • Proficiency with project setup, control-level scheduling, progress reporting, and project close-out
  • Practical field or construction experience
  • EPC project experience in industries such as:
    • Government or federal programs (e.g., energy agencies or similar organizations)
    • Facilities operating under strict quality assurance programs
    • Manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology sectors
  • Advanced knowledge of:
    • Electrical codes and standards
    • Electrical power systems
  • Experience with electrical power system software (e.g., SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), Electrical Transient and Analysis Program (ETAP), or similar tools)
