Senior Substation Engineer
Overview:
This position involves independently designing the physical layout and infrastructure of electrical substations. The engineer ensures compliance with industry standards and codes such as NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, and RUS guidelines. Responsibilities include preparing technical documentation, overseeing procurement specifications, and supporting safe and reliable power delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design of new substations and redesigns of existing facilities without supervision.
- Develop project scopes, conceptual layouts, single-line diagrams, and cost estimates.
- Draft and revise substation drawings using CAD software.
- Finalize record drawings based on field updates.
- Create site grading plans and oil containment strategies (SPCC plans).
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings including layout plans, grounding systems, conduit layouts, and control building specifications.
- Produce accurate and complete design packages, specifications, and bid documents.
- Review and approve manufacturer drawings.
- Mentor junior engineering staff.
- Conduct site visits to verify construction and design accuracy.
- May serve as project lead when assigned.
Required Knowledge:
- Expertise in AutoCAD Civil 3D for substation design.
- Strong understanding of substation components (e.g., transformers, breakers, capacitor banks).
- Familiarity with soil testing, grading, and spill containment planning.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant codes and standards (NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, RUS).
Skills & Abilities:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and technical writing abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Capable of building professional relationships across teams and with external partners.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant engineering experience.
Licensing & Equipment:
- Valid driver's license required.
- PE certification is preferred or willingness to pursue it.
- Familiarity with engineering tools and surveying equipment.
Work Conditions:
- Primarily office-based with occasional fieldwork in varying weather conditions.
- Requires physical activity including lifting up to 50 pounds.
- High mental focus and attention to detail are essential due to safety-sensitive nature of the work.
Travel Requirements:
- Travel within the service territory is expected.
- Occasional overnight and out-of-state travel for training or professional development.
