A leading engineering firm is seeking a Geotechnical Department Manager to oversee and grow its geotechnical operations in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This is a high-impact leadership role where you'll guide a talented team, manage diverse projects across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, and shape the strategic direction of the department.


What You'll Do:

Strategic Leadership & Planning

  • Develop long-term goals and business plans for the department.
  • Manage annual capital budgets and contribute to company-wide strategic initiatives.

Business Development

  • Collaborate with business development teams to drive growth.
  • Lead proposal development and define project scopes, schedules, and resources.

Department Oversight

  • Monitor team performance, chargeability, and productivity.
  • Ensure high-quality project delivery and client satisfaction.
  • Coordinate with architects, civil and structural engineers, and technical staff.

Policy & Compliance

  • Develop and enforce department-specific policies and QA/QC standards.
  • Ensure compliance with company and industry regulations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with HR and IT to support staffing and technology needs.
  • Partner with other department managers to optimize resources and scheduling.

Financial Management

  • Oversee project budgets, billing, collections, and profitability.
  • Approve departmental expenses and identify new revenue opportunities.

Team Development

  • Foster a positive, professional work culture.
  • Mentor and develop staff for long-term success.

Client Engagement

  • Consult with clients on site requirements and project scope.
  • Manage contracts, change orders, and ongoing communication.

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Michigan P.E. license (or ability to obtain)
  • 10+ years of progressive civil engineering experience
  • Strong leadership, project management, and client-facing skills
  • Proficiency in geotechnical software and Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of Michigan codes, regulations, and standards

Work Environment & Requirements:

  • Primarily office-based with occasional site visits
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and navigate construction sites
  • Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional overtime
  • Local travel to job sites as needed

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $120,000 - $150,000/year, based on experience and qualifications
