Relay Testing Technician
Overview:
A growing engineering services firm is seeking an experienced Electrical Relay Testing Specialist to join its team. This role is ideal for a motivated professional with a solid background in protective relay systems, testing, and commissioning. The position involves working on substation and power generation facility projects from initial design through to operational deployment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and support the assessment, design, and implementation of protective relay systems for medium to high-voltage substations and power generation facilities.
- Conduct testing, commissioning, and documentation of protective relay settings and systems.
- Perform functional and diagnostic testing of relays and associated control equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair relay systems and related components.
- Assist in developing and executing commissioning plans for various projects.
- Maintain detailed records of testing, maintenance, and commissioning activities.
- Ensure adherence to safety standards and internal protocols.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of power generation and transmission systems, including protective relays, metering, control systems, and testing methodologies.
- Familiarity with instrumentation and process control systems, including HART-based transmitters.
- Experience with PLC fundamentals, wiring, and troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in 480V motor control systems and commissioning of substation/power plant equipment.
- Ability to create and update as-built drawings using AutoCAD.
- Self-driven and capable of working independently in both field and office environments.
- Excellent communication skills and customer interaction abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD; experience with relay testing software and hardware platforms is essential.
Location Requirements:
- Must reside in or be willing to relocate to Northern California (preferably Sonoma, Lake, or Napa counties).
- On-site presence required 50-75% of the time for data collection, installation, and testing.
- Relocation support may be available for the right candidate.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 5 years of recent experience in electrical testing, installation, and commissioning.
- NICET certification is a plus.
