Building Automation Technician

The Building Automation Technician is responsible for the installation, programming, commissioning, service, and troubleshooting of Building Automation Systems (BAS) that control HVAC and related building systems. This role works hands‑on in the field to ensure control systems operate reliably, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and client requirements.

The ideal candidate has strong technical experience with DDC controls, HVAC equipment, and BAS platforms, and is comfortable working on active construction sites, occupied facilities, and service environments.


Key Responsibilities

Installation & Start‑Up

  • Install and wire DDC controllers, sensors, actuators, valves, and control panels
  • Assist with panel terminations, controller loading, and network setup
  • Verify installation quality and compliance with drawings and standards
  • Coordinate with electricians, mechanical contractors, and project managers during install phases

Programming & Configuration

  • Program and modify DDC control logic for HVAC equipment
  • Configure controllers, supervisory devices, and front‑end servers
  • Develop and update BAS graphics, alarms, trends, and schedules
  • Support third‑party integrations using open protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks)

Commissioning & Testing

  • Perform point‑to‑point checkout, I/O verification, and loop tuning
  • Execute functional performance testing of HVAC systems
  • Troubleshoot software, hardware, and communication issues
  • Support system acceptance, turnover, and owner training activities [cv | PDF]

Service & Support

  • Diagnose and repair issues on existing BAS and HVAC control systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance and system optimizations
  • Respond to service calls and support emergency troubleshooting as required

Documentation & Quality

  • Update as‑built drawings, commissioning records, and service documentation
  • Document changes made during startup or service activities
  • Follow company QA/QC and site safety procedures
  • Assist with closeout documentation and system handover

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of hands‑on experience in Building Automation / HVAC Controls
  • Working knowledge of HVAC equipment including AHUs, VAVs, RTUs, chillers, boilers, and plant systems
  • Experience withBAS platforms such as:
    • Tridium Niagara (N4)
    • Johnson Controls (Metasys / Facility Explorer)
    • Siemens (Desigo / Apogee)
    • Schneider Electric (EBO)
    • Honeywell, Delta, Distech, Automated Logic, or similar
  • Ability to read and interpret controls, mechanical, and electrical drawings
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work in the field

Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have

  • Prior field commissioning or service background
  • Experience in healthcare, data centers, higher education, or mission‑critical facilities
  • Familiarity with networking fundamentals (IP addressing, VLANs, switches)
  • Niagara or OEM certifications
  • Low‑voltage electrical experience
