Engineering Manager
The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the controls and automation engineering function within a fast‑paced technical environment. This role provides people leadership and technical direction for engineers focused on control system design, software development, and field execution. The position ensures high technical standards, consistent project delivery, and continued growth of the engineering team while supporting a diverse portfolio of engineered systems, integrated solutions, and field services.
A core objective of this role is building and maintaining a scalable engineering organization capable of delivering innovative, reliable control solutions across a broad customer and project footprint.
Core Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Oversight
- Lead, coach, and mentor controls engineers, ensuring ongoing technical development, qualification, and performance accountability.
- Establish technical expectations and provide oversight to ensure engineering outputs meet internal quality standards and customer requirements.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and technical rigor across the engineering organization.
- Serve as a senior technical authority, resolving complex engineering challenges and contributing to high‑level design decisions.
- Participate in design reviews and represent the engineering function in discussions with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders.
Systems, Processes & Organizational Development
- Develop, implement, and maintain engineering standards, workflows, and tools that align with industry codes and support long‑term organizational growth.
- Ensure consistency and scalability of engineering execution across multiple programs and project types.
- Partner with project management and functional leaders to align staffing plans, manage capacity, and balance competing technical priorities.
Commercial & Customer Support
- Provide technical support during business development activities, including customer meetings, site walkdowns, and solution scoping.
- Support proposal development by contributing technical input, budgets, schedules, and risk assessments for systems, solutions, and services.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor during customer engagements, ensuring expectations are aligned with deliverable capabilities.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Professional Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in control systems or automation engineering.
- At least 2 years in a formal engineering leadership or management role.
- Significant background in process control environments, with preference for combustion or thermal process applications.
- Demonstrated capability across the full control systemlifecycle, including:
- Converting PFDs and P&IDs into detailed control requirements.
- Defining system architectures, control panels, networks, and I/O structures.
- Selecting and specifying field instrumentation and final control elements.
- Supporting custom control panel design and fabrication, including UL508A documentation.
- Designing burner management, flame safety, and combustion control systems.
- Working knowledge of fuel trains, gas detection, heat tracing, and industrial wireless technologies.
Controls Software & Commissioning
- Proven experience developing PLC, safety, and logic applications for burner management and combustion control systems.
- Hands‑on configuration of SCADA and HMI platforms.
- Development of functional documentation including control narratives, alarm strategies, interlocks, and I/O databases.
- Implementation of combustion control strategies such as jackshaft, parallel positioning, and fully metered cross‑limited systems.
- Direct involvement in commissioning activities including I/O checks, loop tuning, FAT/SAT, startup, and operator training.
Technical Expertise
- In‑depth knowledge of combustion and burner management standards, including NFPA 85, 86, and 87.
- Strong understanding of electrical design standards such as NEC and UL508A for panel and field installations.
- Familiarity with functional safety principles aligned with ISA 84 or IEC 61511.
- Experience with oxygen trim systems, air‑fuel ratio control, and cross‑limited metering.
- Ability to read, interpret, and produce P&IDs, electrical schematics, and control network diagrams.
- Hands‑on experience with PLC platforms such as Allen‑Bradley CompactLogix/ControlLogix and Honeywell HC900 or ControlEdge.
- Experience configuring HMI and SCADA systems using platforms such as ICONICS, Ignition, or Red Lion Crimson.
- Exposure to gas detection systems, heat trace controls, and industrial wireless communications.
- Strong documentation discipline, including revision control and engineering change management.
Leadership & Management Capabilities
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and retain high‑performing engineering teams.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical topics for diverse audiences.
- Experience conducting performance evaluations and creating individual development plans.
- Proven capability to implement engineering systems, processes, and metrics that improve execution and predictability.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline preferred.
- Associate degree in a relevant technical field with substantial professional experience considered acceptable.
