Investment Associate - Japan (Bilingual, Investment & Project Finance)

Location: Tokyo, Japan

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Investment Associate to support the execution and management of energy and infrastructure investments in Japan, with a strong focus on project finance, financial modelling, and coordinating development-phase activities. This role requires close collaboration with Japanese stakeholders, international teams, and external financing partners.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the commercial success of projects across their full lifecycle-from early development through to financing, execution, and operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Investment Execution & Portfolio Support

  • Ensure all active and new projects meet return thresholds, valuation assumptions, and commercial expectations.
  • Coordinate investment-related matters with key investor and other major stakeholders.
  • Manage updates and changes arising during the development phase, ensuring alignment with investment strategy and risk frameworks.
  • Conduct financial modelling, scenario analysis, and valuation for new and ongoing projects.

2. Financing & Banking Coordination

  • Lead and support debt financing discussions with local banks and financial institutions.
  • Prepare materials for lenders, internal committees, and investment partners.
  • Support negotiation of financing terms, covenants, and project finance structures.

3. Development & Commercial Interface

  • Work closely with teams involved in site acquisition, permitting, development, EPC, and business development.
  • Communicate effectively between Japanese stakeholders and non-Japanese management or investment committees.
  • Monitor and report project KPIs, risks, and commercial implications.

Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements

  • Based in Japan, with strong understanding of Japan's regulatory and commercial landscape.
  • Bilingual proficiency:
    • Japanese (Native level) - mandatory
    • English (Business level) - important due to global internal reporting
  • Strong skills in:
    • Financial modelling (project finance, IRR/NPV)
    • Investment analysis
    • Project finance structuring
