Lead Structural Project Engineer
Position Overview
The Lead Structural Project Engineer is responsible for managing small to moderately sized projects under the direction of senior leadership, as well as leading the design of structural elements, systems, and components on larger projects during the Design Development and Construction Document phases.
This role involves hands-on technical design, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and active participation throughout construction.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Design Management
- Manage small to moderate structural projects under the direction of senior leadership
- Lead the design of structural elements, systems, and components on large-scale projects
- Evaluate alternate design approaches for code compliance, serviceability, and constructability
- Perform structural analysis and design of building systems and components
- Develop and analyze structural joints and connections
Technical Leadership
- Assist and direct project engineering staff with design and analysis tasks
- Review drawings, details, and calculations for accuracy, completeness, and constructability
- Review technical specifications for consistency with design intent
Coordination & Documentation
- Collaborate with architects, consultants, and other disciplines throughout project execution
- Coordinate with BIM and drafting staff to develop Construction Documents
- Attend design coordination and construction meetings
Construction Phase Services
- Review shop drawings for conformance with Contract Documents
- Respond to RFIs and project-related field inquiries
- Assist contractors with document interpretation and resolution of construction issues
- Perform structural observations during construction
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure via reciprocity
- Minimum 5 years of building structural design experience
- Demonstrated ability to interpret building codes and technical standards
- Proficiency in interpreting input and output from structural analysis software
- Ability to detail complete structural systems and components
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with project teams, consultants, building officials, and contractors
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Structural Engineering
- Experience with high seismic design category structures
- Experience performing time-history analyses
Relevant Experience
- Overall structural design for moderate to large-scale buildings
- Modeling mid-rise and high-rise structures using ETABS, STRUDL, STAAD, and/or SAP
- Linear dynamic analysis
- Design of:
- Concrete shear wall systems
- Mild reinforced concrete slabs and beams
- Post-tensioned concrete slabs and beams
- Concrete columns
- Structural steel systems
- Mat foundations
- Deep foundations
