Description

Occupational Summary:
Project Engineers II-IV play a key role in supporting and delivering substation design projects, with responsibilities spanning General/Physical Layout, Protection & Control (P&C) design, engineering calculations, drawing development, and client coordination. Engineers in this classification work under the direction of senior engineering leadership, contribute to multidisciplinary project teams, and progressively assume greater ownership of design packages, technical quality, and project execution as they advance through levels II, III, and IV.

Responsibilities

For all levels (II-IV):

  • Support engineering and design activities for substation projects, including physical layout, P&C design, equipment selection, and technical reviews.
  • Perform engineering calculations, develop design documents, utilize engineering software, and apply relevant codes, standards, and design manuals.
  • Assist in preparing project deliverables such as drawings, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Review plan sets and markups to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to design intent.
  • Coordinate with designers, drafters, CAD operators, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in field support activities, such as site walks, commissioning assistance, or construction coordination, as required.
  • Use Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook for documentation and communication.
  • Interact professionally with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Perform other duties related to substation engineering assigned by supervisory staff.

Additional expectations by level:

Project Engineer II:

  • Works under close to moderate supervision while independently completing well-defined engineering tasks.
  • Begins taking ownership of specific design packages or sub-tasks.
  • Provides technical support to CAD/design staff with assistance from senior engineers.

Project Engineer III:

  • Works with moderate independence and leads larger portions of a substation design project.
  • Coordinates sub-tasks across disciplines and supports client communication when needed.
  • Performs advanced calculations and checks work of junior team members.

Project Engineer IV:

  • Serves as a technical lead for full design packages within a project.
  • Provides mentorship to Project Engineers I-III and designers/CAD personnel.
  • Acts as a key technical resource for troubleshooting, design decisions, and quality control.
  • May participate in client meetings to support project progress, technical reviews, or planning discussions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering required
  • Project Engineer II: ~2-4 years of applicable experience
  • Project Engineer III: ~4-7 years of applicable experience
  • Project Engineer IV: ~7-10 years of applicable experience
  • EIT required; PE preferred for levels III-IV (strongly preferred for IV)
