Site Commissioning Lead - Utility‑Scale Energy Projects
This role is responsible for leading on‑site commissioning activities for large‑scale renewable energy and power infrastructure projects, including solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and high‑voltage substations. The position serves as the primary on‑site commissioning authority, ensuring electrical systems are installed, tested, energized, and validated in accordance with project requirements, industry standards, and interconnection obligations.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute site‑specific commissioning strategies, procedures, and schedules
- Confirm construction readiness and installation quality prior to commissioning activities
- Lead cold and hot commissioning, functional testing, energization, and performance validation
- Commission PV, BESS, SCADA, protection, and high‑voltage electrical systems
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve electrical, controls, and protection system issues
- Maintain detailed commissioning documentation including test reports, punch lists, NCRs, and progress reports
- Coordinate closely with engineering, construction, OEMs, and field teams to close deficiencies
- Verify system performance against design criteria, contractual requirements, and grid interconnection standards
- Act as the on‑site commissioning point of contact for utilities, inspectors, and project stakeholders
- Support inspections, walkdowns, system turnover, and milestone completions
Required Skills and Capabilities
- Ability to read and interpret single‑line diagrams, protection and control schematics, and SCADA documentation
- Strong planning, organization, and field coordination skills
- Advanced troubleshooting experience with inverters, controls, protection relays, and HV equipment
- Clear written and verbal communication, including technical reporting
- Strong commitment to safety and quality standards
- Ability to operate effectively in fast‑paced, evolving site environments
- Collaborative approach when working across multiple disciplines and external stakeholders
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent high‑voltage field experience
- 7-10+ years of commissioning experience on utility‑scale power, substation, solar, and/or BESS projects
- Hands‑on knowledge of inverter systems, battery platforms, protection schemes, and NETA testing standards
- Experience with transmission operator and utility interconnection processes
- Proficiency with SCADA systems, PLCs, Microsoft 365, Bluebeam, and commissioning software/tools
- Working knowledge of NEC, IEEE, IEC, NETA, NERC, FERC, and utility standards
- OSHA‑30 construction safety certification
