Principal Transmission Planning Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Transmission Planning Engineer to lead strategic initiatives that shape the future of the transmission grid. This role combines deep technical expertise with market insight and leadership, offering the opportunity to influence investment strategies, competitive transmission development, and policy engagement across multiple regions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead regional strategy: Oversee transmission planning activities across major RTO markets (PJM, MISO, NYISO, ISO-NE) and identify opportunities for competitive transmission projects and merchant solutions.
- Develop innovative solutions: Formulate strategies to address system needs identified by RTOs, state agencies, and key stakeholders, ensuring alignment with reliability and policy objectives.
- Drive competitive proposals: Collaborate with internal teams and external consultants to prepare comprehensive proposal packages for RTO competitive windows.
- Guide technical studies: Perform and/or oversee advanced power system analyses, including power flow, contingency, and stability studies, to support project development and investment decisions.
- Engage in business development: Build and maintain relationships with utilities, developers, and regulatory bodies to expand market opportunities and influence emerging trends.
- Provide actionable insights: Analyze study results and market data to develop business recommendations and communicate findings to senior leadership for strategic decision-making.
- Industry leadership: Serve as a recognized subject matter expert, actively participating in technical and policy discussions at FERC, NERC, NATF, and RTO stakeholder forums to anticipate regulatory changes and inform investment strategies.
- Lead teams and projects: Manage cross-functional teams and complex projects, focusing on risk mitigation, compliance, and successful execution of transmission initiatives.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's preferred).
- Experience: 10+ years in transmission planning, system studies, or related utility/RTO/ISO work, with demonstrated leadership in competitive transmission development.
- Deep knowledge of transmission planning standards, reliability criteria, and regulatory frameworks.
- Proficiency with advanced power system analysis tools (e.g., PSS®E, PowerWorld, PSCAD).
- Strong business acumen and ability to translate technical findings into strategic recommendations.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Preferred Attributes
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience in renewable integration, merchant transmission, and competitive bid processes.
- Familiarity with evolving energy policies and their impact on transmission investment strategies.
