Senior Power Generation Mechanical Engineer

General Definition of Work

This position provides advanced mechanical and industrial engineering design, along with project management support, both remotely and onsite, for various power generation facilities. The role will lead and manage projects related to plant outages, equipment upgrades, and efficiency improvements. Responsibilities include engineering modeling and design in the areas of mechanical systems, thermodynamics, fluid systems, piping, and structural components.

The role requires management of multiple overlapping projects, development of technical scopes for procurement or outsourced work, and rapid assessment and remediation of equipment failures. The position may support projects driven by industry compliance requirements. Additional duties include contributing to reliability and efficiency initiatives to enhance overall fleet performance. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Manage completion of assigned engineering programs and work processes.
  • Lead and perform tasks for assigned projects both onsite and remotely.
  • Collaborate with plant staff and management on efficiency, reliability, and improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor project progress, scope, and budgets; identify and address schedule variances.
  • Apply strong engineering knowledge to model, design, and develop solutions involving mechanical, thermodynamic, fluid, piping, and structural engineering.
  • Conduct field investigations of existing facilities.
  • Assist in cost estimation and budgeting of plant projects using Class 4 estimating methodologies.
  • Develop detailed technical scopes to support procurement or outsourcing activities.
  • Ensure lead times and procurement schedules align with outage timelines.
  • Perform root‑cause analyses for equipment and system failures.
  • Prepare specifications for maintenance outages, repairs, and upgrade projects.
  • Collaborate with plant personnel to plan and engineer system modifications or upgrades.
  • Complete economic justifications for proposed projects.
  • Ensure plant drawings and documentation are properly maintained and updated in accordance with change‑management protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic work and coordinate with vendors and OEMs to return equipment to service.
  • Interpret and develop instructions from technical manuals, drawings, and engineering literature.
  • Make independent decisions under stressful conditions with minimal supervision.
  • Continuously review and improve work processes and procedures.
  • Travel extensively to plant sites as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Understanding of design, construction, and operation of natural‑gas‑fired power generation systems and turbomachinery.
  • Proficiency with engineering modeling and analysis software.
  • Ability to coordinate contract personnel and develop technical scopes and contract language.
  • Ability to properly use personal protective equipment and work in adverse conditions, including confined spaces, elevated work areas, and inclement weather.
  • Ability to assist plant personnel during emergencies or disaster‑response efforts.
  • Strong analytical abilities and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain organized and accurate program documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with plant personnel, external partners, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly valued.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in the power generation industry, including direct experience with contractors, maintenance operations, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Extensive experience with steam generation systems, gas turbines, steam turbines, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and engineering analysis tools (e.g., FEA, CFD).
  • Familiarity with maintenance management systems, project tracking tools, and outage planning.
  • Strong experience with root‑cause analysis (RCA) and management‑of‑change (MOC) processes.

  • May require possession of, or the ability to obtain, specific licenses or certifications depending on assignment.
  • Must meet and maintain all training and continuing‑education requirements for the position.
