Overview
A large, regulated electric utility is seeking Distribution Planning Engineers at multiple experience levels (Engineer, Staff Engineer, Senior Engineer) to support the planning and expansion of its electric distribution system. This team is responsible for the orderly, reliable, and cost‑effective growth of substations and distribution infrastructure to meet current and future demand.
The role involves technical system studies, long‑term planning, operational support, and coordination across engineering, field operations, and cross‑functional teams to ensure safe and reliable electric service.
Role Summary
Distribution Planning Engineers develop and maintain electrical system models, perform power flow and planning studies, prepare system expansion plans, and support the resolution of operational issues. The role combines analytical work, engineering judgment, collaboration, and project management, with increasing leadership responsibility at senior levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain complex computer models of the electric distribution system to simulate system performance
- Perform distribution power flow studies using CYME, including database creation and maintenance
- Prepare cost‑effective system expansion and reinforcement plans using sound engineering practices
- Analyze system performance, constraints, and reliability under current and forecasted conditions
- Resolve electric system issues and communicate complex technical findings to internal stakeholders
- Coordinate with cross‑functional teams to implement design and operational solutions
- Ensure employee and public safety are prioritized in all system designs and projects
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality, accuracy, and consistency
- Develop and improve planning processes, tools, and analytical methods
- Maintain knowledge of applicable utility rules, technical standards, and regulatory requirements
- Train, coach, and mentor less‑experienced engineers (senior levels)
- Apply engineering analysis to identify optimal technical solutions and commit to recommended courses of action
Experience Levels & Qualifications
Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- 2+ years of engineering experience
- Ability to work with moderate supervision
Staff Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- 4+ years of engineering experience
- Ability to work independently or as a team contributor or team lead
Senior Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- 6+ years of engineering experience
- Ability to lead, direct, train, and motivate others
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong technical decision‑making ability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
- High attention to detail and organizational discipline
- Ability to manage time and multiple projects effectively
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word; Access a plus)
- Inquisitive, self‑motivated, and team‑oriented mindset
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (or ability to obtain)
- Prior distribution planning experience
- Experience with planning, modeling, design, construction, or project management of distribution systems
- Experience with CYME distribution modeling
- Knowledge of automation, scripting, or software‑based analysis tools
- Experience with databases (SQL) or web‑based applications
- Knowledge of utility standards, operations, and procedures
