The Role
A well‑established automation and engineering firm is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to join its team in Hopedale, MA. This position is suited to an engineer with a strong electrical design background who can own control panel designs from initial concept through fabrication.
The role offers hands‑on involvement across the full project lifecycle, working closely with controls engineers, project managers, and in‑house panel fabrication teams to deliver high‑quality, code‑compliant electrical designs for industrial automation systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design industrial electrical control panels from scratch, from concept through fabrication‑ready documentation
- Produce complete electrical drawing packages, including:
- Power distribution and control schematics
- Panel layouts and wiring diagrams
- I/O drawings and network architecture
- Bills of Materials (BOMs) and cable schedules
- Select and size electrical components such as breakers, contactors, relays, PLC hardware, VFDs, power supplies, and instrumentation
- Ensure designs comply with NEC, NFPA, and UL 508A standards
- Collaborate with internal panel fabrication teams to support build, testing, and troubleshooting
- Support projects across industrial manufacturing, life sciences, utilities, and automation environments
- Participate in design reviews, RFIs, and as‑built documentation
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of hands‑on electrical design experience in an industrial or automation setting
- Proven experience with control panel design and layout
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical (EPLAN or similar tools a plus)
- Solid understanding of power distribution, MCCs, VFDs, and control wiring
- Working knowledge of UL 508A and NEC requirements
Nice to Have
- Experience supporting PLC/HMI/SCADA systems (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, etc.)
- Exposure to regulated manufacturing or life‑science environments
- Experience working directly with panel shops or in‑house fabrication teams
- Field support, commissioning, or startup experience
