Electrical Substation Engineer

Location: Fully Remote (U.S.)

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Substation Engineer with a background in either Protection & Control (P&C) or Physical design. This role is fully remote and ideal for someone who has led substation engineering packages, collaborated with utilities or EPCs, and is comfortable taking technical ownership of deliverables.

Key Responsibilities:

General (All Candidates):

  • Lead the design and engineering of substation projects, focusing on either P&C or Physical deliverables.
  • Prepare and review engineering packages including drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports.
  • Coordinate with utilities, project managers, designers, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC), and client requirements.
  • Support field questions, construction activities, and QA/QC reviews as needed.
  • Participate in project planning, scheduling, and technical reviews.
  • Work collaboratively in a fully remote environment with effective communication and self-management.

Physical Substation Engineering Focus:

  • Develop physical substation layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding plans, conduit/cable plans, and bus designs.
  • Produce or oversee physical design drawings including general arrangements, sections, details, and BOMs.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to bus ampacity, grounding, equipment clearances, and lightning protection.

Protection & Control Engineering Focus:

  • Develop protection and control schemes and create corresponding one-lines, three-lines, and protection diagrams.
  • Perform relay settings, coordination studies, and logic development.
  • Produce P&C drawings including wiring diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, and CT/PT calculations.
  • Review and interpret client standards and ensure relay programming meets project requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) required.
  • 5+ years of related experience in substation engineering (P&C or Physical).
  • Strong understanding of substation equipment, design standards, and utility engineering practices.
  • Experience with industry-standard tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, CDEGS, ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, or similar - depending on discipline).
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting while managing deadlines and deliverables.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
